Die kleinen Schirmlinge sind oft schwierig zu bestimmen, da sie einander oft sehr ähnlich sind, weshalb die mikroskopische Untersuchung zwingend nötig wird.

Lamellenfarbe
Weisse Lamellen (Es gibt dann noch die gelbblättrigen und olivblättrigen Schirmlinge wie Lepiota elaiophylla, und Lepiota xanthophylla)
In dieser Gattung enthalten verschiedene Arten Amanitine oder sind zumindest amanitinverdächtig. Kleine Schirmlinge sind deshalb strikte zu meiden. Amanitin ist ein Gift das die Leberzellen schädigt und zum Tode führen kann.
